Learn the basics of hand lettering and poster design layout with Claire Vendetti of Billie Claire Handmade!

About this Event

Join Claire Vendetti, owner of Billie Claire Handmade, for an evening of hand lettering at Shop Made in DC - Dupont! During this two hour workshop, Claire will take you from start to finish on how to create your very own hand lettered poster design. Starting with a catchy phrase, students will learn to organize their text for the best visual emphasis; and will then practice three basic hand drawn fonts that can morph into a myriad of fancy letterforms. From there, Claire will walk you through her three favorite composition strategies for creating a well-formed lettering design.

Each student will get one-on-one guidance on how to achieve the best layout for their piece, and then they can begin sketching in their creative fonts! The class will top everything off with a lesson on adding key embellishments to finalize your unique design. Students will get to determine the final size of their artwork (from greeting card to 11x14 poster); and everyone will leave with a completed piece, a selection of Claire's favorite illustration tools, and a packet of practice grids and creative fonts to use in their next project.

This hand lettering class is less of a formal calligraphy class and more of an 'embrace your own writing style' class! The focus will be more on creating a cohesive lettering design with several different fonts and lettering styles; so if you are looking to learn brush lettering or formal metal nib calligraphy - we encourage you to take a peek at Samantha Testa's lettering classes! If you're up for embracing your own handwriting, learning how to build some new fonts, and putting together a lettered phrase - this is the space for you. This class is open to all skill levels - no prior hand lettering experience required.
