Al Tiramisu: #DupontStrong

Category: Neighborhood Spotlight

Every Friday since the beginning of the outbreak, Chef Luigi Diotaiuti and his team at Al Tiramisu, an authentic Italian restaurant in the heart of Dupont Circle, work together to prepare, package, and deliver 35 free meals to the DMV’s heroes on the front lines.

“I’ve always been proud to be a chef, but never as much as now because I get not only to work with food, but also I get to feed the people.”

So far, Chef Diotaiuti and his team have fed healthcare workers at The George Washington University Cancer Center (GWCC), firefighters at the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFD) Engine 23, officers at the 2nd District DC Metropolitan Police Department, and Catholic Charities’ McKenna House in D.C. His contributions have extended beyond just D.C. though, with the Al Tiramisu team donating to fire stations and hospitals in Virginia as well.

Chef Luigi Diotaiuti is no stranger to giving back. Before the pandemic, he recently established a non-profit called Basilicata: A Way of Living. The non-profit aims to preserve employment and traditions on the brink of extinction in Basilicata, Italy. One of the non-profits most prominent projects, Pasta Lab, pairs professional chefs with talented home cooks, mainly grandmothers, who are often the custodians of cooking traditions, in order to help maintain the region’s distinctive pasta-making customs. Chef Diotaiuti is thankful to be able to carry on the spirit and mission of Basilicata: A Way of Living, here in the nation’s capital.

He plans to continue donating every Friday until the pandemic is over. Chef Diotaiuti’s goal is to continue to support medical professionals, firefighters, police officers, cooks, drivers, cashiers, and all essential workers who are keeping our communities alive on a daily basis.

“They are key to our survival. I would like to express my deepest thanks to them for making our stay home order much easier.”

If you would like to support Chef Luigi Diotaiutii’s work, you can place a carry-out or delivery order at Al Tiramisu and indulge in classic Italian cuisine!
