Life is moving at such a fast pace and the demand on us is so great, the last thing we need is pain or a health issue that starts to tap us of our energy and focus.  Yet this is exactly what can happen when we have some health issue or “dis-ease” that conventional medicine may not always be able to address efficiently, and sometimes not able to help with at all.  Let’s look at pain for example;  in most cases, allopathic medicine has little to offer for pain and mostly focuses on relieving the pain by numbing the nerves.  Drugs can bring all sorts of side effects with dependence and or grogginess being two of those side effects.   Sometimes surgical intervention is necessary and the only avenue left, but when surgery is not indicated or essential, one medicine or another is prescribed to “numb” the pain.  If side effects arise from those medications, there is another pharmaceutical to help with that.  That’s not the best approach in my opinion.

Acupuncture, on the other hand, can be thought of as an energetic form of medicine.   Nothing is added or taken out of the body through the use of these hair thin needles.  The energetics of an organ  or muscular  system is what is being manipulated with the needles to correct an imbalance!   This is because we are more than just molecules and flesh and bones; we are a hugely complex being where molecules and genes are one part of our makeup, and energetics are another part.  For best results both systems must be considered.

Your health is your greatest treasure and everything else revolves around that, so isn’t it essential to have a health care system that can address problems effectively when they come up? You deserve more than a symptom cover up or a band aid approach. You deserve correction of the underlying issues. The reason you are on this webpage right now is most likely because other avenues have not been helpful, or you choose to have a natural solution for your health concerns. At Summit Healing Arts, my Acupuncture clinic in Dupont, I  use a holistic approach that takes everything into consideration; from your diet and environment to your emotional propensities, to other life style influences. I consider all and arrive at a treatment plan that is designed specifically for you.

The pioneering physicians of today know that treating just symptoms is not the best approach for the patient, and the focus is becoming more on treating the underlying conditions.  This is known as functional medicine.

It is also becoming increasingly clear that medicine needs to be individualized and one protocol that may work wonders for one patient may not be the best approach for another patient with the same condition. This is known as personalized medicine.

Oriental medicine has had this philosophy at its core for over three thousand years.

Each patient is treated as a unique individual and treatment revolves not just around their symptoms but also around the underlying condition and their propensities, so they can stay healthy long-term.

The ultimate goal with acupuncture is to get you to a place where you are healthy, symptom and pain free, and able to thrive spiritually.

I practice 5 element and 8 principle forms of acupuncture. 8 principle acupuncture is geared more towards “where is the discomfort, and why”, whereas 5 element acupuncture is geared more towards spiritual growth and emotions, our strengths and our weaknesses.  Having studied both forms of acupuncture, I find that acupuncture best serves the client when both systems are used. A lot of times, our discomfort is due to a disharmony in the body, or mind; yet sometimes the root of the problem is emotional and or spiritual.

5 element acupuncture is extremely valuable in terms of allowing us to achieve our full potential and to find meaning in our lives and work.

A typical treatment in my clinic involves an intake and a treatment initially, which takes about 1.5 hrs.  Any follow-ups take about an hour.

It takes about one month’s worth of weekly treatments to get rid of a problem that has been lingering for a year.  Although this isn't a hard and fast rule, its typical of what I see.  If you have been plagued by migraines for 5 years, allow about 5 months of once a week acupuncture treatments for a complete or near complete resolution of the problem, as an example.  The improvements should come right away starting with the first treatment.  While some experts advise patients they need to try up to 20 treatments to know whether the treatment is working, in my experience, if you don’t have some positive response within maybe 4 or 5 treatments, you may need to think twice.
